From Shinkansen to Shinkansen:
Promoting Carbon Neutrality through
Closed-Loop Recycling of Shinkansen Car Bodies

One project in the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Group's recycling initiatives is the closed-loop recycling of Shinkansen car-body materials*. This project is being driven by Group company Nikkeikin ACT in collaboration with companies such as JR Central. Previously, decommissioned Shinkansen cars were recycled into impurity-heavy cast aluminum, which could not be used in the body material of a Shinkansen car as the car body is like the "skeleton" of the Shinkansen, requiring high strength, quality, and reliability from the material. Now, however, the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Group's recycling and manufacturing technologies deliver the same quality as the original material, enabling closed-loop recycling, with the material going directly back into Shinkansen car body parts, and reducing CO2 emissions in the manufacturing process by approximately 50 tons per train.
The ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Group is also planning to expand the closed-loop recycling of aluminum to other products. We will mobilize the power of "Team ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ" to accelerate our carbon neutrality initiatives.
*Railway car bodies mentioned include the underframe, framework, and outer panels, all of which ensure strength.
Process of Shinkansen Closed-Loop Recycling
(Information from JR Central)
Aluminum scrap from decommissioned Shinkansen cars is melted by Nikkei MC Aluminium, cast at the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Light Metal Kambara Complex, and then extruded at Nikkeikin ACT's Niigata Plant to once again become Shinkansen car body materials.
Received the 2023 Japan Aluminum Association Development Award
For its closed-loop aluminum recycling initiative, in addition to being recognized by external organizations, Nikkeikin ACT was honored as the co-winner of the 2023 Japan Aluminum Association Development Award, for the development of its closed-loop aluminum recycling of decommissioned cars into new cars on the Tokaido Shinkansen N700S, in collaboration with companies such as JR Central.

Message from the Development Team
The Shinkansen, a representative of Japanese technology, is an environment-friendly vehicle that emits less CO2 in operation than other transportation systems. In order to fulfill the demands of our customers to reduce the environmental impact not only during operation but also in the manufacturing process, the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Group companies worked together to achieve the closed-loop aluminum recycling of Shinkansen car bodies in collaboration with other companies involved in the project. We are very honored that this project has also received recognition from outside the company.
Going forward, the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Group will leverage its strengths and continue to meet the demands of our customers and the world, helping to improve people's lives and protect the global environment.
